ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) is prescribed by the physicians for the patients suffering from severe acne, most commonly the recalcitrant nodular acne that is unsuccessfully treated by other drug regimen. ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin), an analogue of Vitamin-A, belongs to class of retinoid, acts by inhibiting or decreasing the sebum (oil) secretion in the sebaceous gland, beneath the skin. The decrease in the oil content in the follicle prevents the bacterial action and clogging, thereby results in the dramatic cure of the acne. This drug can be taken alone with out combination of any antibiotics, for a promising effect but with a valid prescription from a Physician. This is an oral medication that should be administered at least 16 to 20 weeks cycle of duration. This can greatly decrease and prevent the severity, recurrence and scarring caused by the acne, especially in the teen agers and the females even after the discontinuance of the drug. It can be available in soft gel and pill form can be taken once or twice daily as prescribed by the health care provider.
Who should not take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin)?
ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) should not be used by pregnant females and also by the females who are expecting or suspecting the pregnancy. It is contraindicated in pregnant ladies because of its teratogenic effects. This drug can distort the organs of the neonate in the womb that can cause potential foetal anomaly and even death. This is a Pregnancy Category – X drug, according to FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the pregnant women should not use the drug, unless she is sexually inactive. During the treatment of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) the child bearing aged females should use the two ways of contraception that includes the Intra-uterine contraceptive devices, mini-pills along with commonly used barriers like condoms and vaginal sponges with spermicidal agents. Before taking ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) you should confirm the negative pregnancy. Apart from this, breast feeding mothers, patients with Liver diseases, alcoholics, patients who are taking Vitamin A tablets, Blood donors, patients with diabetes, Dyslipidemia (Increased Triglyceride level in Blood), eating disorder, obesity, psychiatric illness, pancreatitis and bone loss disorders. Do not take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin), if you are known allergic to ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin), Paraben, soya bean, lecithin and peanuts.
ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) Side Effects:
The serious side effects of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) include the Suicidal thoughts with self-hurting, depressed mood, iatrogenic agitation, troubles in sleeping and concentration, hallucinations. Along with these, less common serious effects of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) are numbness, fatigue, blurred vision, tinnitus (Ear ringing), purpura, jaundice, nausea or vomiting and anorexia. The less serious effects of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) are the dryness of lips, skin and nose, which leads to Epistaxis (nose bleeding), back and joint pains, dizziness and frequent peeling of skin and nails. So it is recommended that the drugs to be taken for other existing disease state are to be taken to the Physicianâ€™s notice and consideration. This includes the Tetracycline group of drugs like the minocycline, Vitamin A preparations, anti-convulsants like Phenytoin and corticosteroids like Prednisone are to be avoided. And therefore the self-medication of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) in any case should be avoided.
How should I take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin)?
The recommended dosage for the ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) is 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/daily. The following instruction should be followed to take the ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/day:
1) Take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything except plain water, that can taken in the divided doses.
2) Take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) while you are sitting or standing up.
3) Take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) with 6 to 8 ounces (about 1 cup) of plain water. Do not take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) with any other drink besides plain water. Do not take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) with coffee, tea, juice, milk or other dairy drinks.
4) Swallow ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) whole. Do not chew the tablet or keep ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) in your mouth to melt or dissolve, which can lead to eosophagitis.
After taking ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) you must wait at least 30 minutes BEFORE:
1) lying down. You may sit, stand, or do normal activities like read the newspaper or take a walk.
2) Eating or drinking anything except plain water.
Keep taking ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) for as long as your health care provider tells you. To treat your acne, you have to take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) as often and in the way ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) as prescribed by the physician.
What is the important information I should know about ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin)?
Take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) can be taken with or without food.
Avoid Sunlight, direct UV rays, hair removers and hair removal process including Dermabrasion which may cause permanent scarring.
For ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) dosage one must follow his doctor’s instructions.
It is important to take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) regularly to get the most benefit, as directed by your Physician.
If you are using the contact lens, you cannot tolerate them because of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) side-effect. If problem persist, consult your Ophthalmologist.
Do not stop taking ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling well. Even after your symptoms improve, you may require continuous treatment for quite some time, as directed by the Physician.
If you are a Geriatric (elderly) patient, consult your health care provider before taking this drug because it can cause bone loss disorders.
Store ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) as per the instructions on the label.
Keep ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) away from the reach of the children and pets.
What happens if I miss a dose of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin)?
Take the missed dose of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) as soon as you remember, during the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and take ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin) next day as routine dose. Do not take a double dose of the medication.
What happens if I overdose of ACCUTANE (Isotretinoin)?
Seek emergency medical attention immediately.
